DAIICT

I did my undergraduate studies from DAIICT(Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology). I liked that place a lot and believe it is one of the best place from where I could have done my undergrad. The course curriculum at DAIICT is a really unique one. When rest of the Indian Institutes taught physics, chem and things in Mechanical Engineering, at DAIICT students started out with what they came there to do: “Information and Communication Technology”. The curriculum at DAIICT enabled those who are motivated to reach places where others are likely to have tough times reaching.

First the usual stuff: The curriculum at DAIICT included a few core courses from each of the fields: VLSI, Communications and Computer Science. These courses were good and enabled you to be a “generalist” ICT engineer. As every student has different interests, the univ. allowed students to create their selection of courses. This allowed us to make an informed and educated[no pun intended] decision. This sculpts a “specialist” out of the student. As our First Director used to say, they are sculpting “generalist-specialists”.

The Unusual stuff: The curriculum focused on non-technical courses as much as it did on the technical courses. The courses varied from Design to Gandhi and to Anthropology. My personal favorite was the course on Science Fiction offered by Prof. Aditi Nath Sarkar.  In addition, all the students took Rural internship[now discontinued] – a 6 week outing into wild with the nearest phone available is about 3 kms away. That is the place where you get the right perspective.  The industrial and the research internships that follow are equally important and rewarding.

One more great things about the univ. is the great environment that it provides for students to go a step further to excel. I for example started out participating in events right from second semester when we developed software for mobile phones in partenership with Reliance Infocomm. Later on, I participated in IBM Invite, Google Summer of Code, Microsoft Imagine Cup and worked with several other companies on small but interesting projects.

Even today, students and professors from DAIICT are doing great. In Microsoft HPC competition, for example, many teams from DAIICT performed really well.
